Otoha Fujiyoshi / Piano

Profile

Born in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Totally blind as a child due to retinoblastoma.

Started playing the piano at the age of five and graduated from the Music Department of the Senior High School for Visual Special Needs attached to the University of Tsukuba and from the Kunitachi College of Music, Department of Performance and Creative Arts, specialising in keyboard instruments.

Has studied under Haruko Kumashiro, Kaori Nagayama, Yumi Hamao and Midori Nohara, and has taken special lessons with J. Klopfichu and Kotaro Fukuma.

Second prize at the ‘Helen Keller Memorial Music Competition’ in 2011 and 2012 (both without first prize); gold medal in the solo category at the ‘Aichi Piano Competition’ in 2018; finalist at the ‘Osaka International Music Competition’ in 2019; finalist at the ‘Osaka International Music Competition’ in 2019.

Performed in numerous concerts as soloist and accompanist, including the ‘Taiwan-Japan Exchange Concert for Visually Impaired Musicians’ (Taiwan, 2018) and the ‘Yomiuri Chubu Newcomers Concert’ (2021); Nomura Arts and Sciences Foundation scholarship recipient from 2019; University Women Association social welfare scholarship recipient, 2018; Sadao Yamada Music Foundation scholarship recipient, 2018 and 2019.

She is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Music Education at the Graduate School of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts, while also studying performance.
